This outlines my personal technology policy, in case you ever had any questions as to why I don’t do something.
Mobile Devices
I do not use a mobile device.
- They always report to Apple or Google servers.
- They require proprietary software to function.
- They are platforms for installing lots of proprietary “apps.”
Instead, I make calls on a home phone. Texts and voicemails to this home phone get sent to my laptop with JMP.chat.
I use a real camera.
Computers
I only use laptop or desktop computers, and I only install free software on them.
Internet
I’m currently trying to quit using Amazon, Discord, and Zoom. My Hebrew classes are on Zoom; the local LGBTQ club is on Discord and Meetup; shopping in my location almost requires Walmart and Amazon.
I primarily use the internet for web browsing, Mastodon, email, and Snikket (XMPP).
- I do not use JavaScript most of the time.
- I block a lot of nasty parts of the internet using Steven Black’s list.
- I browse with Tor.
- I search with DuckDuckGo (HTML edition).
- Do not use Amazon.
- Do not use Facebook or Instagram.
- Do not use WhatsApp.
- Do not use X.
- Do not use Threads.
- Do not use Zoom.
- Do not use Netflix.
- Do not use Disney+.
- Do not use Discord.
- Do not use Google.
- Do not use Spotify.
- Do not use Meetup.
- Do not use Uber or Lyft.
- Do not use Tinder, Grindr, OkCupid, or Bumble.
Media
- I reject Digital Restrictions Management (DRM).
- I don’t stream. All streaming disservices require proprietary software, which I won’t run.
- To watch YouTube, I download the video first before watching it. I rarely, if ever, browse YouTube, because it requires proprietary JavaScript.
I do use DVDs and Jellyfin. I can watch movies this way.
